Solitude fly reels were originally made as a steelheading reel by the Harris Reel Co. They were, and still are, a very well revered reel. A few years ago they were bought out by Edco Co., based in Mt. Vernon, Washington. Edco spent a lot of time and effort making modifications to the reel to improve the performance and durability while still keeping the overall design and phenomenal drag system intact. The result is the new Edco Solitude reels, just recently made available. Click here to read about the original upgrades as well as some significant changes made to the Edco reel in early 2009. These reels have undoubtedly the smoothest drag I have ever felt in a reel. The sealed cork-based drag system results in a noticeably better drag than my beloved Ross San Miguel and Visions (no kidding!). Clean, gradual startup when a fish starts running, no backlash and micro adjustment for near infinite range of settings round out this amazing drag that was originally based on an airplane brake system. The reels are slightly heavier than comparable size modern reels from other companies, which can be nice for balancing bamboo or even longer graphite rods. They are incredibly sturdy with a nice rounded aesthetic based on a wider than average small arbor spool, giving them a well balanced diameter to capacity ratio. An oversized handle and quick release spool are a few of the other small features that come in handy while on the river. The reels have no click in either the in or out direction. Black reels and spools are now slightly more expensive due to their Type III anodizing, giving them an extra layer of durability against dings and abrasions. Pewter and Gold reels and spools are Type II anodizing. Download Owners Manual PDF - 350kb Download Retrieve Reversal Instructions PDF - 216kb |
